Knitwear lasts far longer when washed less and washed gently. Most pieces need airing rather than washing after a single wear.
Washing
- Wool, lambswool, merino and cashmere blends — hand wash in cool water with a wool-specific detergent, or use a wool cycle at 30°C in a mesh bag. Never use biological detergent or fabric conditioner; the enzymes attack the fibre.
- Cotton and bamboo viscose — machine wash at 30°C with like colours. Turn inside out to protect the surface.
- Socks and tights — wash inside out at 30°C. A mesh bag stops them stretching around other items.
Drying
Never tumble dry knitwear — heat and agitation felt the fibre and it does not come back. Press water out between towels without wringing, reshape while damp, then dry flat away from direct heat and sunlight. Hanging wet knitwear stretches the shoulders permanently.
Storing
Fold, never hang. Hanging drags the shoulders and body out of shape. Store clean — moths are drawn to skin oils and food traces, not to clean wool. Cedar or lavender in the drawer helps; airtight boxes for a full season work better.
Pilling
Pills are loose short fibres working to the surface, not a defect. They are heaviest in the first few wears and then settle. Remove them with a comb or fabric shaver in one direction — do not pull them off, that drags yarn from the knit.
Snags
Do not cut a snag. Ease the loop through to the inside with a blunt needle and the knit closes up. A cut yarn will keep unravelling.
Reshaping
Cuffs and necklines that have relaxed usually recover after a cool wash and being reshaped flat while damp.
